I sometimes think about what a teacher should know about the history of the subjects they teach. For example, should a teacher of elementary school or secondary school math know a little bit about the history of math and some of the people who contributed significantly to this history. And, what should their students be learning about important events and people and in the history. Electronic digital computers have not been with us very long, if one takes a long view of history. What are some of the big ideas of Information and Communication Technology, and who are some of the key people who have made major contributions to this field that has greatly changed our world? Alan Kay is certainly one of the great contributors. Perhaps his most important ideas lie in the area of readily portable computing devices (such as laptops) and a definition of computer literacy that is based on students learning to make effective use of ICT as an aid to representing and solving hard problems.
