Problems achieving critical thinking in the classroom.
The problem I see in my classroom related to critical thinking is that students don’t know how to think critically. They have been trained to only think the way they are told. If they do not have a formula in order to pug things into they simply say they can’t do it. This seems to be a direct result of our test driven society and a culture that promotes the idea that you do not have to do anything for your self. Kids are not allowed to struggle with anything anymore. At the first hint of a difficult time, it seems like our society sends something or someone into the situation to solve the problem for them. Even the cartoon shows that are on TV do not require much thought. The show just happens, never asking the viewer to think for themselves. If thought is required, the child needn’t bother because if you wait two minutes the solution will be provided for you. Even toys no longer require imagination. You just put it on the ground and push the button. The toy then plays with itself. All of this causes a big problem for teachers. If a child can not think critically they are at a disadvantage in our information driven society. Everything has a mountain of information backing it up now. Not all of it is true. The only way to discern good information from bad, is to think and read critically. The only way to develop critical thinking is to think. If school is the only place where kids have to think, the teacher is up against the world in proving its importance.
