1981 - 1983 Founder & Executive Director, Atari Institute for Educational 1979 - 1981 Action Research; Educational Marketing Consultant, Atari, Inc. (Warner Communications Inc.), Sunnyvale, CA.

- Founded and developed corporate action research department to support innovative uses of Atari personal computers and related products for lifelong learning. Managed annual budget of $1.3 million and staff of 7. Educational liaison to Corporate Affairs & Office of the President at Warner Communications and Atari management.

- Managed and co-designed commercial educational software and multimedia products, including three national award winning products for National Geographic Society. Managed development of major hypermedia & personal computer-based training (CBT) system for Fortune 500 pharmaceuticals firm; contractor for Power On! (pioneering educational technology policy study by U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment (OTA)). Co-designed PicoNet, a telecommunications network for clients, as well as one of the first home-school computer networks (Mountain View-Los Altos USD). Won contracts totaling over $1.2 million.

- Dr. Ted M. Kahn is the co-founder, President and CEO of DesignWorlds for Learning, Inc. and a co-founding principal of CapitalWorks, LLC. He has been actively involved in developing and marketing innovative uses of interactive technologies for creative lifelong learning for over 32 years. Over the past 15 years, his special areas of expertise have been in the uses of digital and desktop video, as well as the Internet, as media for supporting distributed learning and knowledge design communities. Ted is known internationally as a pioneer and innovator in action-research projects involving technology and learning in both K-12 schools and higher education, homes, workplaces and museums. His commercial business background at Atari, Picodyne Corporation and Digital F/X, as well as research experience at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and the Institute for Research on Learning, included development and marketing of numerous award-winning educational multimedia products, hypermedia computer-based training systems and complete user education strategies and support materials for new kinds of tools for lifelong learning and creativity.
- Ted and his DesignWorlds team applied this background in creating the key web content and web educational marketing messages for Apple in 2000 to support their launch of iMovie, and this web content remained highlighted on Apple’s dv and education web site for over 16 months. Ted is a frequently invited keynote speaker and workshop presenter at national and international conferences on creative education, technology and learning. He consults for Fortune 500 companies, museums, school districts, and non-profit organizations, and has been a board member or advisor for numerous museums, government organizations, and public-private collaborations. Dr. Kahn was a visiting Senior Fellow and has taught at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, and he is an adjunct faculty member of the Center for Social Justice in Education (School of Education) at the University of San Francisco (USF) and also with the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College. He has also been a GLEF Fellow of The George Lucas Educational Foundation.He received his B.A. in computer science (with distinction), and his M.A and Ph.D. in psychology, all from University of California, Berkeley.
Outline for a Document
Here is a rough outline for a Pioneer page. As you create such a page, please make appropriate use of main headings (surrounded by one = on each side) sub headings (surrounded by == on each side) and, if you feel it to be appropriate, sub sub headings (surrounded by === on each side).
1. General demographic types of information such as birth date and place, education, employment, and so on.
2. Setting the scene. This might go all the way back to the pioneer's childhood. Try to capture the essence of how the world was before the pioneer began to do his or her pioneering work. Pay particular attention to the levels of Information and Communication Technology, and their use in education, at the time.
3. Major pioneering efforts and contributions. Try to capture the essence of the pioneer's legacy contributions to the field of CT in education. Be factual. Provide references if possible.
4. Up close and personal stories about the pioneer. These can be contributed by many different authors. Try to flesh out the pioneer as a person and his or her contributions as part of the overall human endeavor of developing the field of ICT in education.
5. Autobiographic materials written by the pioneer in the past and/or written especially for this IAE-pedia document.
6. Interview. If the pioneer is not deceased, try to gather interview information via face to face meeting, via phone, or via email. Here are three sample questions:
- Q. Looking back over your pioneering activities, which do you feel best about? What is your legacy?
- Q. Drawing upon your years of experience and accumulated wisdom, what do you think are some of the very best ways to improve our current informal and formal educational systems?
- Q. What else do you want to say to todays students, teachers, parents, and other people?
7. References. This includes references to sources of information about the pioneer as well as references to some of the published works or and other activities of the Pioneer. (Note that a section heading has already been created for this.)
8. Author or Authors. You are encouraged to include your name as the initial author of the document. (Note that a section heading has already been created for this.)
