Introduction

Quoting from http://www.realmathematics.com/:

Walter Koetke's forty-year career of teaching middle school and high school students and teachers continues to inspire him with new ideas and challenging problems - ideas and problems that comprise the REAL Mathematics™ series.
Among his many recognitions for outstanding teaching is the Distinguished Teacher award he received from the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars.
Mr. Koetke has written many mathematics and technology related articles and several textbooks and is a popular speaker at state and national meetings. He believes his degrees from MIT and Harvard provided a good background, but that most of his real learning resulted from interactions with students working on interesting problems and problem solving techniques like those in the REAL Mathematics™ series.
Mr. Koetke lives and writes in Bloomington, Indiana.

The Math, Science, and Technology Center, also known as MSTC (Lexington, KY), is a prestigious magnet program housed in Lexington, Kentucky's Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. It draws students from throughout the Fayette County Public Schools district. Since the program's establishment in 1991, it has produced 61 National Merit Finalists. It has an average ACT score of 31 and an average SAT score of 1400. 14 MSTC students have scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, and one MSTC student has scored a perfect 36 on the ACT. MSTC graduates are offered an average of five scholarships from different schools, and have attended 20 of the top 30 universities and colleges in the country, as ranked by US News and World Report.

The director of MSTC is at the same level within the school district as a high school principal, and therefore does not answer to the principal of PLD. The founding director of the MSTC was Walter Koetke. The current director is Beverly Smith. The center's teachers generally divide their time between teaching for MSTC and teaching upper-level courses for Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
